Prophecies and Omens

StarClan does not speak plainly. They send dreams, signs, and riddles that medicine cats spend moons trying to interpret.

How Prophecies Work

Prophecies arrive through:

  • Dreams — the most common form. A medicine cat sleeps at the Moonstone and sees something.
  • Omens in nature — a dead bird, an unusual flower, a pattern in the leaves.
  • Direct speech — rare, and usually reserved for leaders receiving nine lives.

A prophecy is not a prediction of what will happen. It's a warning or a hint about what could happen if the clan acts — or fails to act.

Reading an Omen

Common Signs

SignTraditional Meaning
A bird flying aloneDanger approaching, or a cat acting alone
Blood on the stonesDeath is coming
A broken branchA broken promise or alliance
Prey refusing to be caughtStarClan is displeased
A strangers' scentOutsiders will matter
Two moons in the skyA difficult choice ahead

Warning Signs

Some omens are unambiguous and demand immediate action:

  • Clouds covering the moon during a Gathering — the truce has been broken
  • A dead leader's body vanishing — StarClan has rejected them
  • Silence from StarClan for many moons — a serious matter, usually a broken code

Interpreting a Prophecy

Prophecies in this game are puzzles. The medicine cat gives you the words; you have to figure out what they mean.

Steps

  1. Note the exact wording — every word may matter
  2. Look for names and descriptions — "fire," "shadow," "three," "kin"
  3. Compare against known cats — who fits the description?
  4. Check the context — what's happening in the clan right now?
  5. Wait for a second sign — most prophecies come in pieces

Common Mistakes

  • Taking the words literally when they're metaphorical
  • Assuming the prophecy means what you want it to mean
  • Acting on a prophecy before it's complete
  • Ignoring a prophecy because it's inconvenient

Notable Prophecies

"Fire alone can save our clan"

Delivered to a ThunderClan medicine cat shortly before a kittypet joined the clan. The clan assumed it meant a literal fire and prepared for the worst — until they understood it referred to the kittypet's flame-colored pelt.

Lesson: Prophecies often use appearance, not literal meaning.

"There will be three, kin of your kin"

A prophecy about three kits who would hold great power. The clan spent moons wondering whether "power of the stars in their paws" meant a gift or a curse.

Lesson: A prophecy about power rarely says whether that power will be used well.

"Four will become two, lion and tiger will meet in battle"

A warning about an alliance forming against the clans. "Lion" and "tiger" referred to two leaders, not animals.

Lesson: Titles and names in prophecies are often borrowed from other cats.

Omens in Gameplay

Receiving Omens

Omens appear as discoverable objects in the world. A medicine cat can interpret them; a warrior can only note them.

In game: Look for anything slightly out of place — a feather where feathers don't belong, a flower blooming in leaf-bare, a corpse with no wounds.

Interpretation Mini-game

When you find an omen, the medicine cat presents three interpretations. Choosing correctly reveals part of a larger prophecy and grants a vision.

Reward: Correct interpretations unlock prophecy fragments, which eventually combine into a full story quest.

Failing an Interpretation

Wrong interpretations are not fatal — the medicine cat corrects you — but they delay the prophecy. Some story branches close permanently if you misread too many.

Prophecies and Your Choices

Some prophecies can be fulfilled in multiple ways. The game tracks which path you take:

  • The obvious reading — faster, but often costs something
  • The hidden reading — slower, requires more exploration, but preserves honor
  • Defying the prophecy — possible in some cases, with significant consequences

The ending you reach depends on which prophecies you understood and how you acted on them.

Asking StarClan

In moments of crisis, a leader or medicine cat can travel to the Moonstone and ask for guidance.

Limits:

  • StarClan answers when it chooses
  • Some answers are riddles, not instructions
  • The dead do not always agree with each other
  • Repeated visits in a short time yield silence
