Medicine Cats
Medicine cats are the healers and spiritual guides of each clan. They are the only cats who speak directly with StarClan, and they are bound by rules that separate them from warriors.
The Role
A medicine cat does three things:
- Heals the sick and injured — using herbs gathered from the territory
- Interprets omens and prophecies — the only cat who can speak to StarClan
- Guides the leader — advising on spiritual matters and clan decisions
They do not hunt for the clan, do not fight in battles, and do not take mates or have kits.
The Rules
Medicine cats live under stricter rules than warriors:
- No mate, no kits. The clan must come first.
- Neutral in disputes. A medicine cat treats enemy wounded the same as their own.
- Attend every Gathering. Medicine cats meet separately from leaders to share omens.
- Never refuse a patient. Even a trespasser gets treatment.
Breaking these rules is the most serious kind of code violation, because it means StarClan may stop speaking to the clan.
Becoming a Medicine Cat
Unlike warriors, medicine cats are not chosen by ambition. StarClan sends a sign, and the current medicine cat interprets it.
The Signs
- A kit drawn to herbs rather than play
- Dreams the kit shouldn't be able to have
- An omen appearing at the kit's birth
If the current medicine cat sees a sign, they approach the leader. The kit is asked whether they want the path — it cannot be forced.
Training
A medicine cat apprentice:
- Learns every herb and what it treats
- Studies the interpretation of omens
- Travels to the Moonstone monthly
- Assists in every healing
- Memorizes the names of every StarClan cat
Training takes at least as long as warrior training, often longer.
Herbs and Healing
Common Herbs
| Herb | Treats |
|---|---|
| Marigold | Infected wounds |
| Catmint | Greencough |
| Yarrow | Poisoning, induces vomiting |
| Tansy | Coughs |
| Chervil | Bellyache and infection |
| Cobwebs | Bleeding |
| Feverfew | Fever and chills |
| Borage | Fever, helps nursing queens |
| Juniper berries | Bellyache, shortness of breath |
| Poppy seeds | Pain, and sleep |
Some herbs are dangerous in the wrong amount. A medicine cat learns dosage by watching their mentor, never by experimenting alone.
Treatment Limits
- Untreatable wounds — a broken spine or a crushed skull cannot be healed
- Old age — nothing stops it
- Greencough in leaf-bare — often fatal even with catmint
A medicine cat sometimes has to choose who to treat when herbs are scarce. This is the hardest part of the role.
Notable Medicine Cats

Medicine Cat + StarClan
The Moonstone
Medicine cats travel to the Moonstone at every half-moon to share dreams with StarClan. This is where they:
- Report on clan health
- Receive omens
- Meet medicine cats from other clans in truce
- Ask for guidance during crisis
Shared Meetings
The half-moon meetings are the only time medicine cats from all four clans speak freely. Information shared there is held in confidence — though not always perfectly.
Playing as a Medicine Cat
Unlock
Choose the medicine cat path at level 5 when the herb-gathering quest becomes available.
Advantages

- Access to all omens and prophecy quests
- Respect from every clan
- Can defuse some conflicts through diplomacy
Restrictions
- No mate or kits system

Core Loop
- Gather herbs daily (herb mini-game)
