Combat Guide
Clan cats fight with claws and teeth, not weapons. Combat is about timing, positioning, and knowing when not to fight.
Combat Basics
Attack Types
| Move | Damage | Speed | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front paw strike | Medium | Fast | Opening exchanges |
| Rear claw rake | High | Slow | Finishing a stunned enemy |
| Belly rake | High | Medium | Close range |
| Shoulder charge | Low | Fast | Creating space |
| Bite grip | Very high | Very slow | High risk, high reward |
Defense
| Move | Effect |
|---|---|
| Dodge roll | Avoid a single attack |
| Back step | Create distance |
| Brace | Reduce incoming damage by half |
| Crouch | Harder to hit, slower movement |
The Combat Loop
Combat in this game is not a damage race — it's a rhythm.
- Circle — move sideways, don't close straight in
- Bait — feint an attack to draw a dodge
- Punish — strike while the enemy is recovering from their dodge
- Reset — back off before they can counter
Rushing in and mashing attack will lose against any competent opponent.
Positioning
High Ground
Standing on a rock or root gives you reach and makes it harder to be knocked down. Always take high ground when it's available.
Walls at Your Back
Never fight with your back to open ground — you can't retreat and you can be surrounded. Put a wall, a tree, or a rock behind you.
Chokepoints
Fighting in a narrow space means only one enemy can reach you at a time. If outnumbered, retreat to a chokepoint.
Fighting Multiple Enemies
You will lose a straight 1v3. The goal is to never fight 1v3:
- Retreat toward your patrol — fight becomes 2v3
- Use a chokepoint — fight becomes 1v1, three times
- Break line of sight — force them to split up to find you
Never stand and fight when outnumbered. Move.
Clan Fighting Styles
Each clan has its own approach, and it's worth knowing what you'll face:
ThunderClan
Drops from trees and bushes. Expect ambushes from above and tight, aggressive exchanges.
Counter: Fight in the open, away from undergrowth.
RiverClan
Uses water as an escape route. Will bait you toward the river then dive.
Counter: Never fight with your back to water.
WindClan
Hit-and-run. They'll strike, retreat, and strike again until you're exhausted.
Counter: Force a single decisive exchange, don't chase.
ShadowClan
Fights in low light, uses the dark. Will disengage if winning becomes uncertain.
Counter: Fight in daylight or in the open. Don't let them lead you into the marsh.
Injuries
Combat has consequences. Injuries persist:
| Injury | Effect | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Scratches | Minor damage over time | 1 day |
| Deep wound | Reduced speed | 3 days + herbs |
| Broken leg | Cannot run or fight | 10 days + medicine cat |
| Bite wound | Risk of infection | 5 days + herbs |
A medicine cat can speed recovery. Without one, injuries take full time and may worsen.
Fighting While Injured
You can fight while injured, but the penalties are severe. A warrior at half speed against a healthy opponent will lose. Rest instead.
Sparring
Sparring is how apprentices learn and warriors stay sharp.
Rules:
- Claws in — no real damage
- Stop when the leader or deputy calls it
- Yield when pinned
In game: Sparring matches are the safest way to level combat skills. You gain XP without risk of lasting injury.
Battle Tactics
Patrol Formation
When moving through contested territory:
- Point — the most observant cat, leads
- Middle — the rest of the patrol
- Rear guard — the strongest fighter, watches behind
Ambush Setup
When you know an enemy patrol is coming:
- Two cats on either side of the path
- One cat ahead to draw them in
- Strike from both sides simultaneously
- Leave one escape route, or they'll fight to the death
Retreat Protocol
When a battle is lost:
- Call the retreat loudly so everyone hears
- Cover the youngest and weakest first
- Don't stop running until you reach your own territory
- Regroup and count heads before anything else
Combat Rank Effects
Your skill level affects what you can do:
| Level | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| 1-5 | Basic strikes, dodge |
| 6-10 | Bait attacks, brace |
| 11-15 | Counter-attacks, chokepoint fighting |
| 16-20 | Multi-opponent techniques |
| 21+ | Advanced clan-specific moves |
Practice Routine
To improve combat quickly:
- Spar with your mentor daily (safe, high XP)
- Hunt solo — hunting improves stealth and speed, both useful in combat
- Fight apprentice-level enemies first — no shame in easy wins early
- Learn one map's terrain thoroughly — positioning beats raw damage
